Rudolph Small Engine Repair was the dream of a little boy who loved to tinker and tear apart things and put them back together to see if they would work again or just to learn what was inside. It seemed what made other things tick is what made this little boy tick. That little boy was me Wes Rudolph, growing up on a farm and a timber operation in the 1980 and 90s there was always something broken and always something to fix and we did it ourselves. My Grand Father Gene Clem of Star Tannery would let me help and watch as he did minor repairs to the logging equipment from the tree skidders and trucks to the chain saws. The chainsaws are what spiked my interest most. When grandad couldn't fix it, off to Highview WV we would go to Tommy Andersons saw shop there were more interesting things there than one could imagine. Mr. Anderson would let me watch what he was doing while we waited for him to get to grandad's saws and then what needed to be done to his saws. At age 11 I went into the back of the shop at home and found several old broken saws and asked if I could try to make a saw for me out of the parts. I'm sure no one thought I would ever make anything that would run. A few days later I came out with a poorly running 034/036 Frankenstein Stihl chainsaw, we took it to Mr. Anderson and he made a few adjustments and rebuilt the carburetor and I had my first chain saw, 30+ years later I still have it and it still runs.
When I was old enough to get a paying job of my own, I asked to go to work of Clem's Pulpwood and Timber of Star Tannery my grandfather and his brother's operation and was told very quickly NO! No grandson of his was going into the timber business it was too dangerous. He was unfortunately rite; a logging accident claimed the life of Gene Clem in 2007 at only 67 years old. Logging is still one of the most dangerous professions in the United States.
Gene had arranged without my knowledge for me to take a position with Small Engine Sales and Service run by Bobby Funkhouser in Strasburg Va. When he closed in 1998, I would move on to Smoots Sales & Service in Toms Brook Va., with John and Mary Smoot and then later several other firms until I decided to follow my childhood dream. Every time I would try to leave the power equipment industry, I would get pulled right back in.
I'm where fate has put me all these years and feel blessed to be here. Without our customers we are nothing, and we appreciate each and every one of you. We hope you will be part of our today, our tomorrow and someday our yesterday.
